This man named William Ettrick though he had the right to beat his wife if she disobeyed or didn’t do what he asked. This question was asked a lot by historians. Later in the nineteenth century they made a law saying that husbands had the right to beat their wives for disobedience. Back then during this period a lot of violent husbands denied that they ever attacked their wives. His wife Catherine was so afraid of what he would do to her and their children if she ever made him really mad. On christmas day of 1765 she had urged and provoked her husband so he gave her a beating on the one ear only. What William did to his wife was considered mild compared to what people had heard at the church. The abuse these women went through were not just physical abuse but, they were also verbal and mental abuse. My personal opinion is that men should not have the right to beat their wives. A wedding ceremony joins two people who love each other as man and wife. So it is ridiculous to think that men should have the right to beat wife. Also we should not forget that women in England and Wales on average of two women are killed by their husbands or partners every week. More men are killed than women, but nearly half of them were killed by their partners or ex-partners compared to the 5% of men who are killed. Also some women today are still getting beat by their partners or husband which is just not right.
